Doodle Jump
Certain games you can look at and tell they made their way from a wild sketchbook to the video game scene and Doodle Jump is one of those games. As smartphones were starting to become big, app games started to become more relevant and popular. This game can be credited with helping pave the way not just for mobile gaming but for the casual handheld genre. It's a 2D endless jumper with a doodle art style, simple controls, and a lofty goal to shoot for by jumping as high as you can.
About Doodle Jump
Just from the main screen, you can see why this game became as popular as it did and still has pretty high ratings across the board. It's proof that even basic games can be a lot of fun if they're functional, randomized, and have a charming art style. Despite placing you over a large fall, you never feel tense or stressed out. It's all about entering into a relaxed state of mind and getting lost in the simplicity of the jumps and what the game has to offer. Should you fall, you need only jump back up again in order to rise above that loss.
How to Play
Originally made for the phone, Doodle Jump is made to be played with tap and swipe controls which translates to mouse and keyboard.
Controls
- Left Arrow - Move Left
- Right Arrow - Move Right
- Mouse Cursor - Aim
- Left Mouse Button – Fire
You're playing as a small possibly alien creature trapped on some paper with the desire to jump as high as it can. It's naturally bouncy and will automatically jump off of every solid surface that it lands on. You need to control the angle of its jumps to make sure that it always lands on a stable platform. There will also be enemies blocking your way, but you can shoot them with your nozzle nose or jump on them. The game only ends if miss a platform or get knocked down by an enemy.
While jumping, you'll encounter several kinds of platforms. Green platforms are standard and will spawn in random spots as they appear. Blue platforms will move from side to side when they spawn. Brown platforms are broken and cannot be landed on. You'll also come across power-ups to help you out. Both the Jetpack and Propellor Hat will activate on contact, carrying you up a large distance. Springs can be found on platforms and will launch you at a decent height if you land on them.
Tips and Tricks
The game is casual and should be treated as such, as you try to find a rhythm between bouncing and moving. Enemies can be dangerous and your shots can be pretty precise, so it's best that you avoid them instead. Always prioritize a safe move over trying to get a power-up.
