Final Freeway 2R
Official racing games tend to be very popular but arguably more popular are street racing games, which go back to the arcades like in Final Freeway 2R. This was a time when driving was about one of two things: Beating other drivers in a race or driving as long as fast as you can without crashing. They didn't have the full maneuverability of 3D like we do today, but they created an illusion that worked for us and excited us about driving. It created the idea of looking cool by having a nice car that went fast which remains a fantasy even today.
About Final Freeway 2R
The thing about racing games is that they can end just as quickly as they begin which makes you want to keep coming back. That's the effect that this game has with its retro arcade feel and presentation. You'll start driving and building speed quickly as you get a feel for the car and the road. You'll have a rival of course, but it's more about the drive itself and how you control the car to weave through traffic. It's kind of like maintaining a streak in a rhythm game where you just want to keep the ride going smoothly as you get even faster.
How to Play
Final Freeway 2R is a 2D arcade-style driving and racing game that can be controlled with the keyboard. The options offer several control schemes, but the one in the center is the most responsive.
Controls
- Up Arrow - Accelerate
- Down Arrow - Brake/Decelerate
- Left Arrow - Turn Left
- Right Arrow - Turn Right
The goal of the game is to drive as fast as you can through the course in a limited amount of time to get to the very end. It takes place on a public road where you'll come into contact with other drivers changing lanes. The area that the road goes through will also change, with a sign popping up to give you a chance to choose where to go when a crossroads approaches. Each one offers either more open or confined tracks with less or more tight turns and less or more traffic. You can bump into cars, but this will slow you down. If you crash into something solid like a rock, your car will flip over which will respawn you nearby on the road.
While racing, you'll have to deal with a rival who will be driving a notable sports car that will weave in and out of traffic. You're trying to win battles against them which involve overtaking them and trying to beat their time to get through the current area. Before the race begins, you have an opportunity to choose your driver. Each one has its own Strength and Handling score to consider. Strength determines your car's power and Handling determines how well it controls. You can also change the color of your car and the music that accompanies you. Lastly, you can choose between the three difficulties Easy, Normal, or Expert.
Tips and Tricks
The best thing that you can do is to watch the road. The number of drivers in the distance offers an indicator of how much traffic you can expect. You should also pay attention to the road signs to prepare for upcoming turns and avoid crashes.
